About Air Rifles

The air rifle is a gun with a long barrel that fires a projectile using compressed air. The most common projectile used are pellets, BBs, arrows and feathered darts. There are a few different air rifle calibers, but the most common are 0.22 and 0.177 inches.

Pump – This gun is powered by pumping a lever to build up compressed air.

Carbon Dioxide – Compressed carbon dioxide cartridges are the power source for this type of air rifle.

Spring-Piston – This type of rifle is powered be cocking back a lever.

It isn’t known exactly when the first modern mechanical air rifle was invented. The oldest air rifle in existence is in the Livrustkammaren Museum in Stockton. It is a bellows air rifle that dates back to about 1580.

The first mechanical air rifle to be used in warfare was the Girardoni air rifle. It was designed by an Austrian named BartholomäusGirardoni in 1779. It was used by the Austrian army from 1780 up until it got removed from service around 1815.

One of the very first air rifles to be mass-produced was called the challenger in 1888 by an American company named W F Markham.
